Bruce Levenson is an established businessman who is known for being the owner of an NBA (National Basketball Association) team, the Atlanta Hawks. Although Levenson began his life in Washington, D.C., he was raised in Chevy Chase, Maryland. He received his undergraduate education at Washington University in St. Louis (political science degree) and followed that up by going to American University for law school. American University is a private liberal arts institution located in the city of Levenson’s birth.

Levenson’s passion for journalism started when he was in law school. It was then that he started employment at The Washington Star, a daily newspaper. In 1977, he partnered up with Ed Peskowitz to establish United Communications Group. The pair ran the company out of a storage room that was situated right on top of Levenson’s father’s liquor shop in D.C. They created Oil Express, a newsletter that detailed news items within the oil field. United Communications Group attained various other newsletters that existed and created information resources such as Oil Price Information Service.

Levenson’s United Communications Group is a private entity that offers information and assessments that pertain to technology, mortgage banking, the medical field, telecommunications and energy, among various other sectors. The company also runs GasBuddy Organization, Inc. GasBuddy is a company that creates mobile applications and webpages that give users current information regarding gasoline prices.

Levenson presently is an Atlanta Hawks majority partner, along with his United Communications Group partner Peskowitz. The two share ownership of the team with several other businessmen. They all also own Phillips Arena.

When Levenson isn’t hard at work overseeing the Atlanta Hawks and handling other career duties, he’s also an enthusiastic philanthropist. In the past, he’s been involved with noted organizations such as the Hoop Dreams Foundation, the Community Foundation of Washington, D.C. and the I Have a Dream Foundation. He actually was president of Washington, D.C.’s I Have a Dream Foundation. Bruce is married to wife Karen and the couple have had major roles in the establishment of the University of Maryland’s School of Philanthropy and Non-Profit Management.

Levenson also has several big pastimes and hobbies, despite his extremely busy lifestyle. He enjoys sports such as golf and basketball, according to his Forbes profile. He’s also a grandfather who adores being around his grandkids. He has an enthusiasm for adventurous travel and went camping in Antarctica with Karen for four whole days. He has a big appetite for Maryland hard-shelled crabs.
