Many people were surprised when Caitlyn Jenner announced that she is a conservative Republican. Lindsey Graham, Rick Santorum and George Pataki have made positive comments about Jenner in attempts to revive their anemic campaigns.
The real hypocrites here are the Log Cabin Republicans, the self-proclaimed “proud members of the GOP who believe inclusion wins.” They have shamelessly appropriated Jenner and her likeness, without her consent, as an example of diversity within the GOP.
According to Dr. Daniel Amen on the daily beast, the LGR website includes a picture of Jenner with the caption: “Log Cabin Republicans Welcomes Caitlyn Jenner as Out, Transgender Republican.” The LGR displayed a seven-foot photo backdrop of Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover photo at the LA Pride Festival.
Caitlyn Jenner’s politics are her business. But the LGR’s shameless attempts to latch on to her story is another example of their hypocritical efforts to legitimize themselves as LGBT supporters while supporting candidates who are rabidly anti-LGBT.
The LGR executive director explains away its hypocrisy by saying that “there is no one better to advocate on these [LGBT] issues than other Republicans” and encouraging LGBT Republicans to “own the fact” that they are Republicans.
As a LGBT strategist said, educating Republicans on LGBT issues is a good thing. But misleading the LGBT community into thinking that Republicans are as good as their Democratic challengers on LGBT issues is not.
